Why I do this work.
Visual storytelling grounded in field experience, curiosity and respect for place
About Tom Vierus
I picked up my first camera in 2005 while living in South Africa, documenting everyday life with a small point-and-shoot. What started as curiosity quickly became a way of seeing the world and, over time, an essential part of my life.
After completing a Master’s Degree in Tropical Marine Ecology, I began working as a freelance photographer and filmmaker in Germany. My focus gradually shifted toward environmental and conservation storytelling, combining a scientific background with visual narrative. The path was not always straightforward, but it led to long-term collaborations with international NGOs, inter-governmental organisations, research institutes, and selected tourism operators.
In 2018, I returned to Fiji, where I had previously lived and studied, and began building Pacific Media House. The company was formally established in 2019 and is now based in Fiji, working across the Pacific region and internationally.
I am an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers and a member of the Ocean Artists Society. Over the years, my work has taken me on assignments around the world, focusing on stories that sit at the intersection of environment, science, culture, and place.
Still and moving images have the power to inform, connect, and create lasting impact. Strong visual storytelling requires more than technical skill or the right equipment. It requires understanding, trust, and a clear sense of purpose.
My approach is hands-on and collaborative. I work directly with clients from concept development through to final delivery, whether on scientific expeditions, conservation projects, or commissioned film and photography assignments. Each project is different and shaped by its context, audience, and goals.
Coming from a scientific background, accuracy and clarity are central to my work. At the same time, I place strong emphasis on emotional storytelling and visual quality. Whether working in remote field conditions or controlled production environments, the focus remains the same: creating honest, high-quality visual stories that resonate and endure.
At Pacific Media House, I value long-term partnerships, ethical working practices, and cultural sensitivity. Every project receives the same level of care, attention, and commitment, regardless of scale.
